Happy Year of the Earth Dog!

Happy Year of the Earth Dog!

This past week we had a new moon (and partial solar eclipse) that ushered in the Chinese new year.

We have departed the year of the fire rooster (or phoenix) and entered the year of the earth dog.

What does this mean for us?

Justice, Truth and Integrity

Astrologer Susan Levitt writes: “This new Moon is a solar eclipse, so what is hidden can come to light this year. Under the influence of vigilant Dog, the truth is sniffed out, and integrity is rewarded.

The good news continues:
“Dog year is a time of fairness and equality. Controversial issues are given their due, revolutions are successful, politics are liberal, and political oppression is opposed. Justice and honesty are the values that lead to success during Dog year.”

To read more, including to find out how the dog year affects your personal Chinese astrological sign, read here: https://susanlevitt.com/astrology/dog-year-2018/

Loyalty, honesty, integrity, trustworthiness are dog qualities. The dog is noble and good. While earth brings such aspects as stable, practical, grounded and reliable.

A New Vision for Our World

The element of earth and the year of the dog only come together once every 60 years. The last time this occurred was 1958.

According to karmaweather.com, the year of the earth dog can provide a re-visioning of our human lives and systems, and the underdog will demand to be heard.

Health and Wealth

The Year of the Earth Dog 2018 is an excellent time for lifestyle changes, particularly related to adopting new healthy habits.

It could be an auspicious year for finances and starting new business ventures, but be careful to be practical, grounded and not extravagant in spending.

Take Action

Both Chinese and Western astrology agree this is an ideal year to get into action towards what you desire to create with your life. In a dog year it is particularly important to align those desires with the greater good of humanity and life on Earth.

How are you serving others?

I had to share this last bit of good news (from https://lighthousefengshui.com/2018-predictions/):

“Due to a very strong wood element, those pursuing activities having to do with literature, art, business, and efforts of an inspirational nature will be favored.”

So, go forth and create, take action toward your dreams, and join with others in serving a higher purpose. To your fulfilling year,

Maxima

Enthusiasm vs. Willpower: Surprising New Discoveries

Enthusiasm vs. Willpower: Surprising New Discoveries

Maxima age 3 with dollhouse

Maxima at age 3 playing

You have a dream to write, paint, dance, sing, build a house, start a business, travel the world. Do you use willpower to get you there, or do you rely on the energy of enthusiasm to realize your dreams?

Perhaps you think enthusiasm is shallow and limited, comes and goes, and you will have to resort to willpower. Perhaps you feel you have no willpower or it always fails you.

For years I argued for enthusiasm vs. willpower. I am coming to appreciate now that we need both, but I have made several important discoveries about this:

  • The vital bridge between willpower and enthusiasm.
  • The two kinds of willpower—one is a disaster and the other a boon.
  • And most essential of all, the deeper power that moves worlds.

Enthusiasm Comes From the Gods

“Nothing great was every achieved without enthusiasm.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

In my work helping artists and dreamers to realize their dreams, I have maintained that willpower is a weak force, especially as compared to enthusiasm. In The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron has a compelling essay encouraging artists to draw on enthusiasm instead of discipline.

Enthusiasm (from the Greek roots for “the God within,” or as Cameron translates it, “filled with God”) is an extraordinary power that naturally inspires and motivates you in any project, activity, or life dream.

When we are filled with inspiration and passion for our art, we don’t have to force ourselves into the studio. In fact, almost nothing can keep us out of it.

When filled with enthusiasm, we are unstoppable. We are also magnetic to support from others towards our dreams because enthusiasm is contagious.

Willpower Is Weak

Willpower, on the other hand, as anyone who has attempted to overcome an addiction can tell you, is weak. When not backed up by a deeper motivation, vision and love, willpower quickly loses steam. That is because it usually comes from ego, not from heart.

Many of us fall into the trap of see-sawing between trying to enforce a military discipline on ourselves and then falling off the wagon and beating ourselves up mercilessly for it. Take note: This only ensures another repetitive cycle of the same.

This use of will is destructive, an attempt to bully ourselves into doing what we say we want to do, instead of loving ourselves into it.

Cultivating self-kindness creates a soil from which all manner of good and fruitful things can grow.

Anything built on a foundation of self-violence, rather than self-kindness, contains the seeds of its own ruin and our own ruin. So, let me be clear, this is not the kind of willpower I encourage you to use.

But, There Is a Time and Place for Will

I have recently come to appreciate that we need a little willpower, as well as enthusiasm, to reach  our dreams.

Those without any willpower struggle mightily to realize their big life dreams.

The key is to be in right relationship with our will.

Otherwise, we end up in repeating cycles of striving and exhausting ourselves, of accomplishment and burnout, of progress and collapse. Sound familiar?

Will without enthusiasm is dry, hard and loveless, making our work joyless and dull, a drudgery at best, incredibly difficult at worst.

On the other hand, enthusiasm without any willpower can peter out, having us jump from project to project, never completing anything, having too many interests at once, always distracted by the next shiny object.

As a person who has always had a tremendously strong will and a lot of ambition and discipline, it was easy for me to overlook the important role these qualities play in being able to realize our dreams.

Passion Led Us Here

by Ian Schneider

You do need some willpower, especially when the thing you want to do (sing, write, make films. . . ) conjures up fear, past hurt, self-doubt.

Or when you have to take a step towards your dreams that is uncomfortable in order to make the time and energy to engage with your art, such as get up a half hour earlier or step out on a stage in front of an audience.

Or when you need to move past an addiction, such as staying up too late watching TV or reading Facebook compulsively or listening to the news before beginning to create in the morning (bad plan!).

Willpower alone will not get you over these hurdles, but you’ll need a little burst of it.

30 Seconds of Willpower to Realize Your Dreams

You need some will to overcome inertia, fear, bad habits, resistance. In most cases, you only need short bursts of will, 30 seconds at a time is enough. Just enough to overcome the temptation in front of you and get yourself into the studio or to bed on time so you’ll have energy to go into your studio the next day.

But you will need these short bursts daily.

If you think you don’t have any willpower, that is just an old lie you have told yourself. We all have inner strength.

If it were a matter of life or death (which doing what you love is), you would find the motivation. If I told you that you would be dead in a week unless you create every day for an hour, you would move mountains to make it happen.

That is will, but it is deeper than the inner taskmaster (who is not your friend or ally). The will energy I’m talking about here draws on a love for your life, and that love is powerful.

Both willpower and enthusiasm come and go. But there is a shining link between those energies that lasts.

In my next post, I’ll share with you what that magic power is that is vital to reaching your dreams. I’ll also share what’s behind it that is the power that moves worlds.

Stay tuned!

To your dreams,
Maxima

Coming to Fullness at the Solstice

Coming to Fullness at the Solstice

On Tuesday night I held my annual Summer Solstice fire circle. It was a beautiful night, despite the intense heat wave we are having. There was a deep peace, beauty and presence of heart in our gathering. We told jokes, drummed and danced, honored the gifts of the sun, and shared deeply about what’s been moving in our hearts and coming to fruition in our lives.

One participant shared a beautiful solstice practice that you can do now to bring more of what you desire into your life. I did it today, and it felt great! I share it with you below. Read on!

Celebrating Fruition

So much has been coming to fullness in my life recently:

  • Maxima's weddingI just celebrated the first anniversary of my marriage, a year of profound deepening and blossoming in our relationship, so beautiful and miraculous.
  • I’ve experienced dramatic healing and transformation in myself this past year, the letting go of something I have carried all my life.
  • I’ve spent over a year revising my book of poems, working with three different editors. A difficult process, still underway but it’s coming much closer to fruition now. I have learned so much, and my poetic voice has been growing clearer and stronger.
  • My Mentoring students this past year have been blossoming. Among many other things, they:
    • Completed a draft of a book that had been languishing for years in piles of notes,
    • Opened a business that allows her to do what she loves and play more,
    • Created greater balance between parenting, work, self-care and creativity,
    • And most rewarding to me, freed themselves to experience way more creativity, fulfillment and joy.

Gifts of Completion

And…
My most recent Artist’s Way and Living Your Dreams classes both celebrated their graduations.
These graduations are so fun, moving and inspiring. The transformations, openings and blessings that the participants share never cease to astound me.

Students reported giving themselves the gifts of time, space and permission for painting, creating music, sculpting, dancing, writing poems, and pursuing their big, passionate, heart dreams, without pushing and driving themselves.

Students used the tools I teach to release old wounds, crippling self-doubt and self-criticism and limiting patterns. They found more harmony, ease, balance and peace in their lives.

I’ll share a few of their comments with you here:

Student Testimonials

“A door has opened for me to be in my studio working! There has been great progress in making painting a priority, making time in my schedule to make this happen. The work is going well, and there is a great sense of engagement and accomplishment, even doing simple studies, after years of avoidance.…I’m finally using my planning tools to further my heart’s desire.”

I am in a much more centered place in my current life than ever before. I’m so thankful for all the gains I’ve made and am feeling blessed for all the hard work and coming full circle within. I find that my heart is more at peace within than I thought possible. I have never felt more accepting of myself and relishing who I am—I love me, all of me.

Many of the students from these two classes have chosen to continue on with one-on-one Mentoring with me, so that they can get individual support, guidance and transformation to co-create the lives they dream.

If you are curious about how that kind of support could help you release blocks and truly live your dreams, first click here to find out more, then contact me for a free Discovery Session to explore if what I offer is right for you now. I have space in my schedule for a few more Mentoring students at this time. I invite you to seize that opportunity.

To your fruitful summer,

P.S. See below for the beautiful, simple Solstice practice you can do to magnetize more of what you love into your life.

Practice: A Little Solstice Love Letter

Write a letter to yourself to be opened on the winter solstice (or if you live where it’s winter right now, on the summer solstice).

In this letter, imagine all that you wish to see come to fruition by six months from now.

Dream big, even if you have no idea how or if it could come true. Put in all that you hope your future self will be celebrating then. Give this as a gift to your self.

You may also wish to include any words of encouragement or wisdom or love, anything you might need to hear six months from now.

Then, seal it in an envelope marked “Open on the Winter Solstice, 2017.”

And here’s the tricky part: Put it where you will find it six months from now. You could pin it to your Dream Board, if you have one, or put it in the top of your desk drawer.

The student who shared this with me said she was amazed at all that had come about just as she had written it since the last solstice. This is a powerful window of expansion. Give yourself the gift of the power of the solstice to add a little extra magic to your life now.

Harvesting the Old, Dreaming the New

Each year I pause to go through a process of harvesting the outgoing year.

Corn HarvestWith colored pens and big paper I make a lively chart of the highlights and events of the year, I write down the major things I did and experienced, what dreams, desires and goals were reached or moved towards, what did not go as planned or hoped, and what I learned.

I give thanks for the many blessings that came, always surprised by how many there were and how much I did, and I acknowledge, grieve and let go of the disappointments and difficulties, so that I can truly make space for the new.

It is so helpful to take this time to pause and reflect, not to plow unreflecting into the new year, but instead to allow a potent gap in which to feel the sacred void, the womb of creation, open before us, vivid with new life waiting deep down in the dark soil.

This harvesting honors all that we experienced and gleans from it what we can take with us to help us in the coming year, as well as giving time to release that which would hold us back. It prepares the soil of the garden.

Then, I begin visioning the new year, what I wish to create, call in, invite, what I’d love to do and be and experience, what this year might be about for me. This is like looking at seed catalogs from the garden store and choosing what to plant in my dream garden. It is exciting and fun.

As I begin to vision the new year, I start with broad strokes, tuning into what I call “the dreaming of the year,” what Life is dreaming through me, wanting to come to birth in the coming year. If I get quiet and tune into my heart and body and spirit, let myself dance and be moved and sung by this dreaming, there can be beautiful surprises, great inspiration and deep wisdom to guide my path.

I ask myself big, inspiring questions and write freely and quickly to see what arises.

I uncover my Breakthrough Dream for the year, the key focus for me, the one thing that will make the biggest positive difference in my life if it were to come to light.

Then, taking time over several weeks, I get more specific, looking at 13 key domains of Life to see what might want to be born in each area this year, which areas feel most important now, and what actions I can take to support my dreams.

I do this visioning to support what is most important, meaningful, joyful, rich for me in life, to walk my path of Heart, aligned with my deepest values and highest aspirations. It is sacred play.

I create ritual and creative play around all this dreaming and intention-setting, so that it comes alive in body, mind, heart and spirit, and has the support of Life moving with me.

And then, throughout the year, I keep reviewing these dreams, desires and intentions, adjusting them as new insight and learning comes. I ask myself what actions I will take this week to support my dreams and desires or whether this is a time to allow myself to just rest in Beingness.

And all along the way, I acknowledge and give thanks for the steps I take and the blessings that come.

I invite you to create your own rituals and processes that feel right to you to harvest the past year and then let yourself dream the new year. You might be amazed at what occurs when you bring this level of attention and intention to your life and take time to listen to your beautiful Heart.

If you would like support in this process, I would love to work with you in my one-on-one Mentoring program.

Love and blessings on a beautiful, heartfelt year, maxima

The Power of Small Bites

This week I read an article in the paper about people who are choosing to do one thing a day every day for a year. One woman made a miniature chair out of found objects each day and posted a photo of it on Instagram.

The article talked about how that one repeated action transformed their lives, giving them confidence and follow-through, when previously they struggled with this, opening up their creativity, helping them make unexpected connections with others, even getting them exciting job opportunities.

In The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, one of her “Rules of the Road” for artists is “Set small and gentle goals and meet them.” Many of my students comment on the power of this “rule” for helping them finally reach their heart’s big dreams, empowering them and making it do-able for them to create amazing things with their lives. One of the key tools I teach students in my classes and mentoring program is how to take a big dream and divide it into manageable steps, and how to fit those steps into your life.

Here’s a simple, radical tool you can use now to see huge, unexpected progress toward a longed-for dream in the coming year and do something radical for yourself and your life.

First, choose one dream that is close to your heart. Yes, just one. This act of choosing your #1 dream to focus on this year is, in itself, a catalyst for big change. Your dream might be as broad as wanting to be a writer, or even just wanting to be more creative, or to have a better relationship with your kids, or as specific as wanting to make a CD of your songs.

Next, commit to taking one step every single day, including weekends, toward that dream.

It will help tremendously if you come up with a list of steps toward your dream that take 10-15 minutes or less. You can also include on your list larger steps that require more time, but if they require more than a single two-hour period to complete, divide them down into smaller steps. Write these down and keep this list where you can look at it daily. Making this list of action steps can be your first step toward your dream—Day One, check! You can add to this list as you go through the year.

For some dreams, the step may be the same every day. For instance, you might do a 10-minute freewrite every day, if your dream is to be a writer. Or you might make a 10-minute sketch, if you want to spend more time making visual art.

By supplying yourself with steps that take 10-15 minutes or less, your resistance to taking the step will be less, and you can do this step no matter what your day holds. For this reason, it may be helpful to have on your list some steps that only take a few minutes.

The key is to commit to taking the step, no matter what. If you miss a day, do not allow that to throw you off your dream. Get right back on the horse and re-commit with your full heart.

It will also help you to keep a log of the steps taken each day, even if it is the same step daily.

In this way you will build tremendous momentum, confidence, intention and attention around your dream. You will find yourself taking larger steps that before would have scared you, gaining courage and focus and, most importantly, enthusiasm and a sense of possibility for your dream. And you will find the Universe moving on your behalf with support and opportunities, signposts and companions to guide and help you on your way.

Will it always be easy to take this daily step? Probably not. You may encounter all kinds of inner resistance and outer obstacles. But you will learn and grow, heal and discover, and most of all, be giving time to something that matters deeply to you. And that can really transform your life.

So, go ahead: In the comments below this, post your dream and your commitment to take one step a day towards it. And watch your heart’s dreams flower. If you need help thinking of a step, post your question about that, and I’ll do my best to help.
