The Power of Creative Routines, Part II

The Power of Creative Routines, Part II

This is Part 2 in a series on The Power of Creative Routines. If you missed Part 1, click here.

Supportive Structures

Accessing the power of routines is about creating supportive structures in our lives that have us putting what we most cherish and desire first and foremost in our days.

Routines then allow those healthy habits to become automatic, so that we do them without a ton of resistance, without needing to decide each time whether or not we’re going to do it.

This, in turn, frees up precious energy and time that would have been spent resisting, deciding, dithering, frittering, aimless. Instead we have energy and passion to be creative, to devote to our dreams.

This is what any good coach, mentor or course will do for us. They create supportive structures in our lives that help us focus around what matters most to us, so we don’t lose track. They also give us practical, do-able steps and guidance to move forward towards what we desire.

Any good course, whether it is a group program or one-on-one, can help with this, because it is so much easier to form new habits with the support of others, with encouragement and accountability and regular structure.

So, one way to begin getting healthy routines in your life is to sign up for a course or get yourself a coach or mentor.

Which Routines Do I Need?

Which routines will create supportive structures for your life around that which you most value? Because that is what you want to support, cultivate, put front and center in your life.

If you value your health, it makes sense to have regular exercise become a routine—and, I would add, it’s best if that is exercise you enjoy, that brings pleasure to body and soul.

If you value creativity, it makes sense to create structures that support creativity, such as a space that is conducive to creating, times set aside for making art each week, habits and rituals to help you begin that promote an inspired creative state in you.

Make a list of things you most value, love or enjoy, that you desire in your life. Mine includes creativity, love and spirituality.

Write down: What routines or habits do you already have that support what you love and value?

What habits are not supporting something you value or are robbing you of time and energy for what you love?

Create a Routine

Now, get creative, curious, experimental. What one new routine or practice could you try on that would foster something you love or value, that would support you having more of that in your life?

Choose a new routine and commit to it for the next 3 weeks. Keep a log of each time you do it. A star on your calendar will work for this.

If you miss a day, simply re-commit and do it the next time. Don’t beat yourself up or try to make up for missed days. This will only sabotage you.

At the end of the 3 weeks, evaluate. I recommend you do this in writing. How did it work for me? Do I need adjust the routine in some way or try something different? What support might I need to keep going?

Have Accountability and Constancy

One of the most powerfully helpful practices I know for accomplishing your heart’s desires is to have an accountability buddy or a group, a mentor or coach, that you check in with regularly. That way, you have a place to report on how it’s going, get support when you feel lost or are struggling, and celebrate when you have a breakthrough.

The Best Creative Practice

The most supportive creative habit I know is to schedule creative time (what I call “studio time”) into your calendar every week, preferably on the same day(s) and at the same time(s) each week.

Photo by Ben White on Unsplash.com

Don’t wait for inspiration to strike. And don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ll get to it sometime in the week. Show up at the same time week after week, and the muse will start showing up too. You’ll also learn how to be creative without needing that lighting bolt that comes and goes.

It doesn’t matter if you start with 3 ten-minute periods of time or one 5-hour block. Choose whatever works best for you, your creativity and your current life. Whatever helps you overcome resistance. What matters is actually showing up at the time you set and doing what you set out to do.

Start small and then build on your successes. I can’t emphasize this point enough. Start with whatever feels do-able and inviting. You can always add more later.

This may take some trial and error to find what actually is most supportive of you and your flourishing creativity. It also requires devotion, a willingness to keep playing with it. And to notice what gets in the way if you don’t show up at the time you planned. What changes do you need to make?

There are many helpful routines for establishing a life you love. The key is to find the ones that align with you, and then to make them a habit through repetition and constancy.

Especially early on in establishing a new routine, it’s important not to skip days and make lots of excuses. This will slow you way down in developing a true creative habit.

If you’re still stuck, you may have some limiting beliefs and old patterns that keep sabotaging your creativity. That’s where a really good creativity coach or mentor can be invaluable.

Let me know how it goes for you. I’d love to hear your stories, insights and questions. If you post your comments here, I’ll respond.

Coming to Fullness at the Solstice

Coming to Fullness at the Solstice

On Tuesday night I held my annual Summer Solstice fire circle. It was a beautiful night, despite the intense heat wave we are having. There was a deep peace, beauty and presence of heart in our gathering. We told jokes, drummed and danced, honored the gifts of the sun, and shared deeply about what’s been moving in our hearts and coming to fruition in our lives.

One participant shared a beautiful solstice practice that you can do now to bring more of what you desire into your life. I did it today, and it felt great! I share it with you below. Read on!

Celebrating Fruition

So much has been coming to fullness in my life recently:

  • Maxima's weddingI just celebrated the first anniversary of my marriage, a year of profound deepening and blossoming in our relationship, so beautiful and miraculous.
  • I’ve experienced dramatic healing and transformation in myself this past year, the letting go of something I have carried all my life.
  • I’ve spent over a year revising my book of poems, working with three different editors. A difficult process, still underway but it’s coming much closer to fruition now. I have learned so much, and my poetic voice has been growing clearer and stronger.
  • My Mentoring students this past year have been blossoming. Among many other things, they:
    • Completed a draft of a book that had been languishing for years in piles of notes,
    • Opened a business that allows her to do what she loves and play more,
    • Created greater balance between parenting, work, self-care and creativity,
    • And most rewarding to me, freed themselves to experience way more creativity, fulfillment and joy.

Gifts of Completion

And…
My most recent Artist’s Way and Living Your Dreams classes both celebrated their graduations.
These graduations are so fun, moving and inspiring. The transformations, openings and blessings that the participants share never cease to astound me.

Students reported giving themselves the gifts of time, space and permission for painting, creating music, sculpting, dancing, writing poems, and pursuing their big, passionate, heart dreams, without pushing and driving themselves.

Students used the tools I teach to release old wounds, crippling self-doubt and self-criticism and limiting patterns. They found more harmony, ease, balance and peace in their lives.

I’ll share a few of their comments with you here:

Student Testimonials

“A door has opened for me to be in my studio working! There has been great progress in making painting a priority, making time in my schedule to make this happen. The work is going well, and there is a great sense of engagement and accomplishment, even doing simple studies, after years of avoidance.…I’m finally using my planning tools to further my heart’s desire.”

I am in a much more centered place in my current life than ever before. I’m so thankful for all the gains I’ve made and am feeling blessed for all the hard work and coming full circle within. I find that my heart is more at peace within than I thought possible. I have never felt more accepting of myself and relishing who I am—I love me, all of me.

Many of the students from these two classes have chosen to continue on with one-on-one Mentoring with me, so that they can get individual support, guidance and transformation to co-create the lives they dream.

If you are curious about how that kind of support could help you release blocks and truly live your dreams, first click here to find out more, then contact me for a free Discovery Session to explore if what I offer is right for you now. I have space in my schedule for a few more Mentoring students at this time. I invite you to seize that opportunity.

To your fruitful summer,

P.S. See below for the beautiful, simple Solstice practice you can do to magnetize more of what you love into your life.

Practice: A Little Solstice Love Letter

Write a letter to yourself to be opened on the winter solstice (or if you live where it’s winter right now, on the summer solstice).

In this letter, imagine all that you wish to see come to fruition by six months from now.

Dream big, even if you have no idea how or if it could come true. Put in all that you hope your future self will be celebrating then. Give this as a gift to your self.

You may also wish to include any words of encouragement or wisdom or love, anything you might need to hear six months from now.

Then, seal it in an envelope marked “Open on the Winter Solstice, 2017.”

And here’s the tricky part: Put it where you will find it six months from now. You could pin it to your Dream Board, if you have one, or put it in the top of your desk drawer.

The student who shared this with me said she was amazed at all that had come about just as she had written it since the last solstice. This is a powerful window of expansion. Give yourself the gift of the power of the solstice to add a little extra magic to your life now.

The Power of Small Bites

This week I read an article in the paper about people who are choosing to do one thing a day every day for a year. One woman made a miniature chair out of found objects each day and posted a photo of it on Instagram.

The article talked about how that one repeated action transformed their lives, giving them confidence and follow-through, when previously they struggled with this, opening up their creativity, helping them make unexpected connections with others, even getting them exciting job opportunities.

In The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, one of her “Rules of the Road” for artists is “Set small and gentle goals and meet them.” Many of my students comment on the power of this “rule” for helping them finally reach their heart’s big dreams, empowering them and making it do-able for them to create amazing things with their lives. One of the key tools I teach students in my classes and mentoring program is how to take a big dream and divide it into manageable steps, and how to fit those steps into your life.

Here’s a simple, radical tool you can use now to see huge, unexpected progress toward a longed-for dream in the coming year and do something radical for yourself and your life.

First, choose one dream that is close to your heart. Yes, just one. This act of choosing your #1 dream to focus on this year is, in itself, a catalyst for big change. Your dream might be as broad as wanting to be a writer, or even just wanting to be more creative, or to have a better relationship with your kids, or as specific as wanting to make a CD of your songs.

Next, commit to taking one step every single day, including weekends, toward that dream.

It will help tremendously if you come up with a list of steps toward your dream that take 10-15 minutes or less. You can also include on your list larger steps that require more time, but if they require more than a single two-hour period to complete, divide them down into smaller steps. Write these down and keep this list where you can look at it daily. Making this list of action steps can be your first step toward your dream—Day One, check! You can add to this list as you go through the year.

For some dreams, the step may be the same every day. For instance, you might do a 10-minute freewrite every day, if your dream is to be a writer. Or you might make a 10-minute sketch, if you want to spend more time making visual art.

By supplying yourself with steps that take 10-15 minutes or less, your resistance to taking the step will be less, and you can do this step no matter what your day holds. For this reason, it may be helpful to have on your list some steps that only take a few minutes.

The key is to commit to taking the step, no matter what. If you miss a day, do not allow that to throw you off your dream. Get right back on the horse and re-commit with your full heart.

It will also help you to keep a log of the steps taken each day, even if it is the same step daily.

In this way you will build tremendous momentum, confidence, intention and attention around your dream. You will find yourself taking larger steps that before would have scared you, gaining courage and focus and, most importantly, enthusiasm and a sense of possibility for your dream. And you will find the Universe moving on your behalf with support and opportunities, signposts and companions to guide and help you on your way.

Will it always be easy to take this daily step? Probably not. You may encounter all kinds of inner resistance and outer obstacles. But you will learn and grow, heal and discover, and most of all, be giving time to something that matters deeply to you. And that can really transform your life.

So, go ahead: In the comments below this, post your dream and your commitment to take one step a day towards it. And watch your heart’s dreams flower. If you need help thinking of a step, post your question about that, and I’ll do my best to help.
